If a site requires both soil revitalization and also revegetation, then hydraulically applied biotic soil is an innovative cost saving solution compared to hauling in and spreading topsoil.

 

Traditionally, soil revitalization work after construction starts by properly preparing the ground (Planting Bed) for revegetation. If onsite topsoil was removed and stored properly it is the best for revegetation. Unfortunately, all too many revegetation attempts after construction fail due to onsite soils being deficient in organic matter, microbial activity, and and/or nutrients due to substrate soil mixing with onsite topsoil during the construction process. That is to say, establishing a sustainable cycle for vegetation is problematic. In nature, sustainable vegetation is achieved through the biological process of organic matter breaking down in soil and delivering the nutrients plants need to germinate and, establish. This is referred to as nutrient cycling.

So, the option to import topsoil or compost is deemed necessary for revegetation or run the risk of revegetation taking place on poor or marginal soil causing germination and establishment if any to take longer. If topsoil or compost is brought in, the effort and cost associated with the hauling and spreading truckloads of topsoil and the potential for the introduction of weed seeds, pathogens, pesticides and even heavy metals is a risk.
