WHAT IS HYDROSEEDING

Hydroseeding (or hydraulic mulch seeding, hydro-mulching, hydraseeding) is a planting process that uses a slurry of seed and mulch and is an alternative to the traditional process of broadcasting or sowing dry seed which dates back to the 1950’s. The seed is mixed into a water-based slurry of mulch, fertilizer, and/or other additives that are applied to prepared soil under high pressure which promotes seed growth. It is often used as a highly effective erosion control and quick planting technique for hillsides, ditches and sloping lawns.

Hydroseeding can be used almost anyplace where the ground has been disturbed from residential lawns to large-scale construction projects and anything in between. It is ideal for seeding grasses, ground covers, wildflowers and/or virtually any other plant that can be grown from seed and can be completed in a noticeably short period of time and will typically cost less than planting with sod, but more than broadcast seeding. Results are often quick with high germination rates producing grass growth in about a week and mowing maintenance beginning around 3 to 4 weeks from the date of application.

Hydroseeding can be completed any time of year, provided that the ground is not frozen or snow covered. There are advantages and challenges that come with each planting season and some seasons tend to provide more hospitable climates for growing different varieties of lawn grasses, ground covers, wildflowers.
