SOIL AMENDMENTS

Soil amendments are materials added to soil to improve its physical, chemical, or biological properties, creating a healthier environment for plant growth.

What Are Soil Amendments?

A soil amendment is any material mixed into soil to enhance its structure, drainage, water retention, aeration, or nutrient availability, indirectly supporting plant growth. Unlike fertilizers, which supply nutrients directly to plants, amendments focus on improving the soil environment itself, making it easier for roots to grow and for beneficial microorganisms to thrive. For example, compacted clay may need amendments to loosen its structure rather than additional nitrogen, which would not solve drainage issues. Every project has it’s own set of distinctive challenges and anticipations which makes soil amendment products an essential part of any type of ground reclamation job to produce a good growing environment. Amendments can be ph adjusters, moisture retainers,  germinate enhancers, erosion control tackifier and/or soil stabilizers.

Benefits of Soil Amendments

  • Improved Soil Structure: Creates crumbly, well-aerated soil for better root growth.

  • Enhanced Water Management: Helps sandy soils retain moisture and clay soils drain efficiently.

  • Support for Beneficial Organisms: Organic amendments feed soil microbes, which aid nutrient cycling.

  • Long Term Soil Health: Unlike fertilizers, amendments provide lasting improvements to soil properties.

Practical Considerations

  1. Conduct a soil test to determine pH, nutrient levels, and texture before adding amendments.

  2. Thoroughly mix amendments into the soil for maximum effectiveness; simply placing them on top reduces benefits.

    1. Avoid excessive use, as too much of any amendment can harm plants.

    2. Amendments can be organic or synthetic, and some are approved for certified organic gardening.

  3. Using the right soil amendments tailored to your soil type and plant needs ensures healthier, more productive gardens and landscapes.

TACKIFIERS: LIQUID & POWDER

Fibratac product

Chemical resin compounds used to increase tack, or stickiness of a surface to increase higher stress compliance and stiffer strain rates.

PH ADJUSTERS: LIQUID & POWDER

NeutraLime product

A soil’s pH determines which nutrients and chemicals are able to survive, so maintaining a stable pH is essential if you’re trying to grow healthy crops or plants. PH is determined by a soil test.

MOISTURE RETENTION

Hydrogel product

Co-Polymer gel granules that increase the amount of available moisture in the root zone by absorbing up to 400 times their weight in water.  As the soil dries, moisture is slowly released from the gel granules improving growth and reducing demand for supplemental watering.

SLOPE STABLIZATION

Interlocking Fibers product

Specially coated synthetic fiber to improve the tenacity and bonding of all fiber mulches, longer fiber length provides mechanical adhesion to the soil surface, especially effective when seeding on slopes, or shielding seed from heavy rains.

GERMINATION ENHANCERS

NeutraLime product

“Bio stimulants” for soil organisms that contains biological activators.  Active ingredients include vitamins, enzymes and other stimulators such as B-vitamins, triacontanol and others to promote soil life and nitrogen fixation that stimulate the plant to photosynthesize better.
