CHOOSING A HYDROSEEDING SYSTEM
Choosing a hydroseeding system that is right for you is not an easy task. Therefore, you need to ask yourself these pertinent questions prior to making a decision.

1. Is a paddle or jet agitation the best choice for me?
JET AGITATION PRO’S
-
Systems are very affordable compared to mechanical systems. For someone entering into hydroseeding industry starting with a jet unit can keep your costs low and profits high.
-
Systems are easy to use. One person can easily run them. The learning curve to operate is only quick.
-
Systems are easy to service and close to maintenance free. You can run one for years doing little other than changing the oil in the engine. The only moving parts other than the engine are the impeller in the pump and ball valves.
-
Systems have powerful pumps in order to mix and spray a fairly thick slurry.
-
Clean up is fast and easy. Just put 50 gallons of water in the tank and spray it out.
JET AGITATION CON’S
-
Systems work best with granular (pourable) mulches.
-
Mulch bales must be broken up as you load system to basketball size or smaller.
-
Systems cannot use Biotic Soil's
MECHANICAL AGITATION PRO’S
-
Systems are easier to load because you can just drop full mulch bales in them without needing to break them up.
-
Slurry mixing and pumping are independent of each other
-
Systems have powerful pumps that can mix and apply a thicker slurry compared to Jet Agitation systems.
-
Most systems can use and apply almost any mulch product including 100% wood mulches, BFM’s, FGM’s and Biotic Soil's
MECHANICAL AGITATION CON’S
-
Systems are costly compared to Jet Agitation systems.
-
Systems require daily maintenance, have more complex drives and moving parts compared to Jet Agitation systems.
-
One person can run a system, but it is better to have two people when seeding.
2. What sized unit should I get?
Deciding what size of machine to get is more a case of knowing the kinds of jobs and size of the jobs you will be doing and how often you will be hydroseeding.
-
A smaller jet agitation machine allows you to get into hydroseeding with less cost than a larger mechanical agitation machine.
-
You can do big jobs with a small machine and small jobs with a big machine, but you can do larger jobs faster and more efficiently with a larger machine.
-
A landscaper who does a handful of jobs a year may be better off by investing less in the size of a machine and even if it takes more time to do the job it will still be effective, efficient, and less costly than subbing out the job to someone else.
-
If you are primarily going to do small residential work the best choice is at least a150-200 gallon machine.
-
If you are doing medium sized residential and small commercial work the best choice is at least a 300-500 gallon machine.
-
If you are doing large residential and medium sized commercial work the best choice is at least a 750-1000 gallon machine.

3. What brand of hydroseeder should I buy?
This is the least pertinent question. All major manufacturers of hydroseeding equipment make good products and you should be happy with whatever brand you chose.
4. How do I get what I expect?
-
Seek out an equipment and materials distributor whom is experienced and knowledgeable
-
Educate yourself about the hydroseeding process and partake in industry organizations
